Move your Wix or Squarespace website to Whisk

To move your website off Wix or Squarespace, ask your AI coding assistant to copy your live site exactly as a Whisk app and prove the copy matches. Then point your domain at Whisk and cancel the website builder. The new site is code you own, kept in your own repository, and you change it by asking.

Neither Wix nor Squarespace lets you download your site as files that run somewhere else. So the assistant works from what visitors see: the words, the pictures and the page addresses.

Why people move

  • The bill. A website builder is a subscription for one site. On Whisk the site is one app, and the same price covers your team's other tools too.
  • Being stuck. Your site only runs inside the builder. If the price goes up or a feature goes away, you start again.
  • Forms that go nowhere. The builder's contact form ends up in an email or in the builder's own inbox. Someone has to copy it into the system where the work happens.
  • Small changes. Moving a block or adding a branch means logging in and dragging things around. With your own code, it's a sentence to your assistant.

Before you move: does your site sell online?

Whisk doesn't have a shop built in. If customers buy from your site with a cart and card payments, stay on your builder for now. Everything else on a typical business site comes across.

What the assistant does for you

You don't need to prepare anything. The assistant does the groundwork that a web agency would charge for:

JobWhat the assistant does
Find every pageFollows every link on your site and reads its sitemap, and lists every page address, form, picture and download
Keep your page addressesBuilds the new site with the same addresses, so links from Google, emails and other sites still work
Copy the pictures and filesDownloads them from your live site
Find your formsLists each form and what it asks for, and saves what people send into the app's database
Find your domainLooks up where your domain is registered and which of its records are for email
Prove it matchesCompares every old and new page, on a computer screen and a phone screen, and fixes the differences

The steps

1. Paste the prompt

Open your AI coding assistant in an empty folder and paste this, with your own address:

Read https://whisk.run/skill and follow it. Our website at https://www.yourcompany.com is on Wix (or Squarespace). Recreate it exactly as a Whisk app.

First, open the site in a real browser, because the builder draws its pages with scripts. Follow every link from the home page and read the sitemap. List every page address, form, image and download, and tell me about anything that is a builder feature, like a shop, bookings or a members area.

Then rebuild it. Keep every page address, word, image, layout, colour and font the same. Download the images and files from the live site. Every page is public. Mark pages that rarely change as cacheable. Save what people send through each form to the database. Don't improve or redesign anything.

Then prove it's identical. For every page, take screenshots of the old and new versions at computer and phone sizes and compare them. Compare the words. Check every link and page address. Send a test entry through each form and confirm it saved. Fix every difference and check again.

Add a private report page to the app with each page's old and new screenshots side by side, and anything you couldn't make identical.

Then help me move our domain. I'm not technical, so explain each step in plain words. Find out where our domain is registered and which DNS records are for email. Add our domain, both the bare domain and www, to the app, with www forwarding to the bare domain. Walk me through changing the records one screen at a time: what to add, what to replace, and what not to touch. Check the records after I've saved them, and tell me when the new site is live.

2. Approve the login

Early on, the assistant runs whisk login. Open the address it shows, sign in to Whisk (or create a free account), check the code matches and approve.

3. Read the report

The assistant gives you the address of the report page, which only your team can open. Skim it. If something looks wrong, tell the assistant in plain words and it fixes it.

4. Move your address, with the assistant

Your assistant walks you through this one screen at a time. Your domain is either with Wix or Squarespace, or with another company such as GoDaddy or Namecheap, and the assistant finds out which. It gives you a few records to change, and tells you where they are:

  • On Wix, your domain's records are under Domains, then Manage DNS Records.
  • On Squarespace, they're under Domains, then your domain, then DNS.
  • Anywhere else, look for a page called DNS or Manage DNS.

Add the new TXT record. Replace the records your old site uses with the ones the assistant gives you, so visitors don't still land on the builder. Don't touch anything for email. If you're unsure, take a screenshot and show the assistant before you change anything.

Tell the assistant when you've saved them. It checks the records, Whisk issues the HTTPS certificate, and yourcompany.com opens the new site, with www.yourcompany.com forwarding to it. Our company website guide explains each of these records in more detail, if this is your first time.

5. Cancel the builder

Wait a few days and check that forms are coming in. Then cancel the Wix or Squarespace site plan. If your domain is with them, check how they charge for the domain once the site plan ends, or move the domain to another registrar first. The assistant can walk you through either.

Builder features that don't come across on their own

  • Bookings and members areas. These are the builder's own features. They can be rebuilt as part of the app, but treat each one as its own job after the move.
  • Blog posts. The assistant copies them like any other page, however many there are.

What it costs

Your own address needs a paid Whisk plan. Starter is $49 (US) a month for 10 apps, so the website and nine other tools share one price. You can try it free for a month. See pricing and our comparison with Wix and Squarespace.

Paste the prompt in step 1 into your assistant, with your website's address.
