Use Whisk with Codex

To use Whisk with Codex, let Codex reach the internet, then give it one prompt. Codex reads Whisk's instructions, changes your app to fit them and deploys it. You approve one login in your browser and get a web address your team can sign in to.

The one setting to change first

Codex runs commands in a sandbox. In its usual mode it can edit files in your project, but it can't reach the internet. Whisk needs the internet: Codex has to download the Whisk command line, sign in and send your app.

There are two ways to allow it:

  • Approve as you go. Leave the settings alone. When a command needs the internet, Codex stops and asks you. Say yes to the whisk commands.
  • Allow it for this project. Add this to .codex/config.toml in your app's folder:
sandbox_mode = "workspace-write"
approval_policy = "on-request"

[sandbox_workspace_write]
network_access = true

Codex can still only edit files inside your project. It can now download and send things.

The prompt

Open Codex in your app's folder and paste this:

Read https://whisk.run/skill and follow it to deploy this app to Whisk. Install the whisk command line if it isn't installed. Adapt the app to Whisk's rules: sign-in comes from Whisk, not from the app, and data goes in the Postgres database Whisk provides. Run whisk doctor until it passes, then deploy, and tell me the web address.

What you'll see

  1. A code to approve. Codex runs whisk login, which prints a web address and a short code. Open the address, sign in to Whisk or make a free account, check the code and approve it. You do this once on each computer.
  2. Changes to your app. Codex adds a whisk.yaml file that describes the app. It takes out any login screen of its own, because Whisk signs people in before they reach the app. It moves data that sits in files into the app's database.
  3. Checks. Codex runs whisk doctor, which lists anything that doesn't fit Whisk's rules. Codex fixes each one and runs it again until it passes.
  4. A web address. Codex runs whisk deploy. Whisk builds the app, sets up its database and turns it on. The address looks like https://quotes.your-team.whisk.page.

If the app needs passwords or keys for other services, Codex tells you their names. You type them into Whisk yourself, so they never go into a chat.

After that

Invite your team from the app's page in Whisk. Each person signs in as themselves, and you choose who can use the app.

To change the app, ask Codex as you normally would and then ask it to deploy again. Every deploy is checked before it goes live, and a database change that fails is put back the way it was.

Your first app on Whisk is free, forever, for up to three people. Past that, Starter is $49 (US) a month for 10 apps. See pricing.
