Use Whisk with Gemini CLI
Gemini CLI can build an app and put it on Whisk in one session. Trust your app's folder, give Gemini the prompt below and approve the commands it asks about. At the end you have a web address your team signs in to, with a database and backups already set up.
Before you start
- Trust the folder. The first time you open Gemini CLI in a folder, it asks whether to trust it. Say yes for your app's folder, so Gemini can run commands there.
- Keep the approvals on. In its normal mode Gemini asks before it changes a file or runs a command. That's the right mode for this. You'll see each
whiskcommand before it runs.
The prompt
Open Gemini CLI in your app's folder and paste this:
Read https://whisk.run/skill and follow it to deploy this app to Whisk. Install the whisk command line if it isn't installed. Adapt the app to Whisk's rules: sign-in comes from Whisk, not from the app, and data goes in the Postgres database Whisk provides. Run whisk doctor until it passes, then deploy, and tell me the web address.
The commands it will ask about
| Command | What it does | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| The install line | Puts the whisk command line on your computer | Approve |
whisk login | Prints a web address and a code | Open it, sign in to Whisk, check the code, approve |
whisk init | Writes whisk.yaml, which describes your app | Approve |
whisk doctor | Checks the app against Whisk's rules | Approve, as often as it asks |
whisk deploy | Builds the app and puts it online | Approve |
Between those, Gemini changes your app. It takes out the app's own login screen, because Whisk signs people in before they reach the app. It moves data from files into the app's database. It takes passwords for other services out of the code. You type those into Whisk yourself when Gemini tells you their names.
Make it remember
Gemini CLI reads a file called GEMINI.md in your project at the start of every session. Ask Gemini to add this line to it:
This app runs on Whisk. Follow https://whisk.run/skill for every change, and run whisk doctor before you deploy.
Next time you ask for a change, you don't have to explain Whisk again. Ask for the change, then ask it to deploy.
Your team
Open the app's page in Whisk and invite people by email. You choose who can use each app.
Your first app is free, forever, for up to three people. Starter is $49 (US) a month for 10 apps and as many people as you like. See pricing.
