Whisk vs Retool

Retool is for building internal screens, like admin panels and dashboards. They sit on top of databases and systems you already have, and they're mostly built by developers in a visual editor.

Whisk runs whole apps that your AI coding assistant writes. Logins, a database, backups and scheduled jobs are included.

If your team already has its data and wants screens on top of it, Retool is a good fit. If you want an AI to build a complete tool that just runs, Whisk is the better fit.

How pricing compares

Retool charges per seat. On its Team plan that's $10 to $12 a month per builder and $5 to $7 per internal user; on Business, $50 to $65 per builder and $15 to $18 per user. External users (customers, clients, partners) need the Business plan and are charged per user once you pass 50.

Whisk charges per live app and never per person. Every business runs one app free. Starter is $49 a month for 10 live apps, Team is $149 for 50, and both have unlimited members and customer users.

Here's a worked example. A team of 20 using three internal tools, with two people building, costs roughly $110 to $150 a month on Retool's Team plan. On Whisk it's $49. The gap grows with every person you add, and it's widest when clients need to sign in, because Retool only allows that on its Business plan.

Retool can still come out cheaper in one case: two or three people using one set of screens over data you already have.

Choose Retool if

  • Your data already lives in several systems (a warehouse, Salesforce, internal databases) and you want screens over it, not a new app with its own data.
  • The people building are developers or analysts who like a drag-and-drop editor rather than an AI assistant.
  • You need to run it on your own servers today, or need enterprise controls such as audit logs, single sign-on and user provisioning from a long-established vendor.
  • Only a few people will use it, so per-seat pricing stays low.

Choose Whisk if

  • You want your AI assistant to build the whole tool, and you'd rather describe it than assemble it.
  • Clients or customers need to sign in, without a per-user bill.
  • You want the app to be ordinary code you own and can take with you.
  • You'd rather not set up a database, backups and schedules separately for each tool.
