Server-side code

Run an app in any language, with or without a Dockerfile.

Built on Railpack, BuildKit and zot

Plans: Every plan, including the free app

What you get

  • TypeScript, Python, Go and other common languages
  • Builds with or without a Dockerfile
  • Starter templates for TypeScript, Python and Go
  • Build-only secrets for private packages
  • A build log for every deploy
  • Earlier builds kept, so a rollback needs no rebuild

How it works

An app on Whisk is an ordinary web server in a container. It listens on one port, answers a health check and logs to its output. Any language that can serve HTTP works, and the app rules fit on one page.

Each deploy is built with BuildKit, the open-source container builder. Without a Dockerfile, Railpack detects the language and writes the build plan; with one, Whisk builds the Dockerfile. Built images are stored in zot, an open-source container registry.

The starter templates use well-known libraries: Hono and Drizzle for TypeScript, FastAPI and SQLAlchemy for Python, chi and pgx for Go. The templates, the CLI and the whisk.yaml format are open source under the MIT licence.

Example

An engineering firm runs a timesheet and project hours app written in Python with FastAPI. Whisk detects Python and builds it without a Dockerfile. The firm's drawing register, written in Go by a different developer, deploys the same way.

For your coding agent

whisk init --template py
whisk doctor
whisk deploy

whisk deploy builds the app, runs its migrations, checks its health and then switches traffic. The few rules every app follows are in the app rules, and starting from an app template gets them right from the first deploy.
